Oscar Valladares has been a resident of the 57th Assembly District for 12 years. He moved to Whittier in 2008 to start his family. He has been a strong community advocate fighting for a region that works for all residents of the District.
In 2018, Oscar was elected to the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees where he has been fighting for greater investments to help community college students realize the promise of higher education through quality career opportunities. Oscar was unanimously voted by his colleagues as Board President in June and again in December 2019. He is now serving his full term for 2020.
Oscar is a former Dreamer, an immigrant from Guatemala, a product of public education, proud alumnus of East Los Angeles Community College, and California State University Los Angeles.
Oscar has more than 17 years of public service. He began his public service career as Non-Emergency Dispatcher for Norwalk Public Safety Department. In 2005, he joined the Los Angeles County as a Child Support Officer in the Department of Child Support Services, and is currently a Deputy Public Conservator in the Department of Mental Health.
Oscar has a strong history of protecting prevailing wages, healthcare benefits and Secured Retirement for working families as a union leader and civic participation advocate. He was elected and served as an Executive Board Member (2013-2016) in his union SEIU 721, representing over 95,000 public servants.
In 2015, Oscar Valladares was named the Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Democrat of the Year (Assembly District 57) by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party for his activism in electing pro-labor candidates. In 2016, he co-founded the Rio Hondo Democratic Club to engage voter participation and leadership development. Oscar is currently serving as a Delegate for Los Angeles County Demoractic Party and California State Democratic Party for Assembly District 57.
As a Rio Hondo College Trustee, Oscar has been a champion for student success. He is a strong advocate for equitable funding to increase enrollment, performance and workforce development pathways. Oscar is committed to financial stability, responsible investment, and transparency.
In his first year in office, Oscar led a collective effort to complete a safety and facilities assessment as a priority to create a 21st Century educational experience for students and staff. He and his colleagues saw the need and took action to refinance a portion of Rio Hondo College General Obligation Bonds saving tax-payers more than $13.9 million.
Oscar is currently working with County Supervisor Janice Hahn on a project to provide affordable housing and resources to local students by refurbishing the old South Whittier Library.
